Why Do Recycle Establishments Give Two Dollar Bills for Change?

They do this because the novelty of the two-dollar bill is supposed to remind the holder of their establishment and, hopefully, return to give them more business. Recycling places are not the only ones to do it, but it’s much more common to visit a recycling establishment than some of the others who also give two-dollar bills as change. Some shops, including an interesting magic shop in New York City also use this marketing gimmick.

The Different Opinions About the Rare Two-Dollar Bill

Only about 0.001% of the 2 trillion dollars in circulation are two-dollar bills. The rarity of this note gets a diverse reaction ranging from curiosity to outright frowning on using it. It is unclear if the tactic of giving a two-dollar bill as change to get customers to come works or not.

The reason for their low circulation is because most people don’t spend their two-dollar bills and just keep them as they are considered lucky by those who believe in lucky items. Me, I believe in Lucky Charms, but I pour them first and THEN the milk, I’m not a lunatic… but I DO make cringey dad jokes… clearly.

Others dislike the two-dollar bill because it just doesn’t seem to have a place. Retail vendors, for example, don’t have a two-dollar bill slot in their cash registers, so it’s annoying having one in the box. Furthermore, they get a bad reputation from stories that have gone around that say that strip clubs use them as capital, giving them as change because that would make tipping bigger amounts. There was also a time when they were considered the note that was used to buy off dirty politicians, so if you had one it meant you had sold out somehow.
